Why a Cross-Plane V8 Sounds the Way It Does

Every V8 has eight cylinders, but not every V8 has the same voice. The difference between a deep, rolling rumble and a high, race-bred shriek comes down to a single component you will never see: the shape of the crankshaft.

Two crankshafts, two characters

In a cross-plane V8, the crankshaft’s throws are arranged at 90 degrees, like a plus sign viewed end-on. The firing order this creates is deliciously uneven between the two cylinder banks — and that unevenness is the sound: the loping idle, the deep burble, the thunder under load that defines the classic V8 voice.

A flat-plane V8 arranges its throws at 180 degrees, firing left-right-left-right with perfect regularity. The result revs like a pair of four-cylinder engines in formation — urgent, high-pitched, exotic — the voice of many mid-engined race-bred machines.

Neither is better. They are different instruments.

Flat-plane engines trade smoothness and low-end character for high-rpm breathing — ideal when a car lives at the redline. Cross-plane engines carry more low-frequency content and effortless mid-range character — ideal when a car must feel mighty at every speed, not only at maximum attack.

Flat-plane is a sprinter’s scream. Cross-plane is thunder that never hurries.

Why Éire chose the thunder

The Éire Eden GT’s twin-turbo V8 is deliberately cross-plane. A grand tourer’s voice should rise from somewhere deep — present at a walking pace, magnificent at full throttle, never shrill. It is a sound you recognise before you see the badge, which is precisely the point.

Electrification makes the choice stronger, not weaker: the electric motor supplies the instant response, freeing the V8 to be chosen purely for character.
